Heartworm Disease: The Silent Killer
Heartworm disease is a deadly parasite that is transmitted by mosquito bites. South Carolina is one of the highest states in the country for heartworm disease in dogs. Treatment is dangerous and very expensive.
Heartworms are worms that live in the heart and lungs. Without treatment heartworms can lead to congestive heart failure and death. There is no cure for heartworms in cats, but prevention is available.
Luckily, this disease is completely preventable. We do so by giving a pill once a month (or if appropriate a yearly injection) for life starting at 8 weeks of age.
Testing for heartworm disease yearly is very important, including if the pet is on prevention or not. We recommend your pets first test between 8- 12 months of age. Most companies have a product guarantee ( meaning they will pay for treatment if your pet ever gets this parasite) as long as you can provide proof of monthly heartworm prevention and yearly testing with previous negative results.
We have the cheapest tests in the area and it only takes 3 drops of blood and 5 minutes!
